Substantial Web Outage Affects Dozens Websites and Mobile Apps

A large-scale web disruption has impacted many online platforms and applications worldwide, with users noting troubles getting online after problems at Amazon’s online infrastructure platform.

The disrupted services encompass the social media app Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, as well as multiple Amazon-managed platforms including its key e-commerce website and the Ring security doorbell company.

Throughout Britain, the financial institution Lloyds was affected along with its affiliates Halifax and the Scottish bank, and also reports of difficulties accessing the HM Revenue and Customs online portal on the start of the week. Additionally in Britain, several Ring device owners took to online platforms to complain their doorbells were malfunctioning.

In the UK alone, accounts of issues on specific platforms reached the tens of thousands for every service.

Officials confirmed that the issue started in the eastern region of the America at AWS, a division that offers crucial internet backbone for numerous businesses, who rent out capacity on AWS infrastructure. AWS is the world’s largest web hosting system.

Shortly after midnight (PDT) in the United States (morning UK time), officials reported “higher problem frequencies and delays” for the cloud services in a area on the east coast of the US. The ripple effect was seen to hit platforms around the world, with the problem monitoring service indicating problems with the identical platforms in different parts of the world.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a tool that monitors web disruptions, further indicated a rise in issues on the start of the week, and numerous instances found in Virginia, the region of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where the company stated the problems originated.
