Student Society President-Elect Removed Following Conservative Activist Comments
The president-elect of the Oxford Union has been removed from his position after losing a vote of confidence that followed his disputed online comments about Charlie Kirk.
The motion against George Abaraonye achieved the necessary super-majority to remove him from office, according to an announcement from the society.
Contentious Posts
The dispute erupted after the student reportedly posted messages on social media that appeared to welcome the death of the American conservative figure, who was fatally shot while speaking at a university in the United States.
According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.
The student leader is also said to have posted in a messaging group with other members seeming to express approval of the event.
Vote Outcome
The no-confidence motion was conducted over the recent days, with results revealed on Tuesday.
Official notices showed that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of removal, while 501 were opposed the motion.
The announcement stated that the future president was deemed to have stepped down in following the society's regulations.
Procedural Disputes
Proceedings were temporarily halted early on the previous day after the returning officer was allegedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from several representatives.
In a statement, Mr Abaraonye claimed that the vote tally had been halted because election administrators believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of process errors".
His statement unequivocally denied that any person acting for George had participated in intimidating or disruptive behavior.
Continuing Controversy
The student stated that significant concerns had been referred to the disciplinary committee and that he continued as the elected leader.
His comment added that he was "proud and thankful to have the support of significantly more than half of students at Oxford" who voted to have a "secure voting process and resist attempts to subvert democracy".
Opponents have said that any decision to keep him would "demonstrate internationally that the Oxford Union has prioritized politics over principles".
External Reactions
On Friday, Mikey McCoy presented an open letter to the society on a related program podcast.
The message criticized the union of becoming a place where "student leaders openly applaud the assassination of a political opponent".
The communication warned that if Mr Abaraonye were to remain in post, Kirk's allies would "personally contact every U.S. political figure who has ever graced the union's chamber and advise them against future participation".
The Oxford Union had previously condemned Mr Abaraonye's comments after the activist's killing and confirmed that concerns filed against him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.
The president-elect had been one of multiple members to debate with the activist at the union in May.
