Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey Files Not Guilty Plea to Allegations of Falsehoods Congress
Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation head James Comey has entered an innocent plea to giving untrue testimony to lawmakers and hindering a legislative process.
His attorney entered the answer representing him in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.
The defense lawyer stated he would seek to have the legal matter dismissed for multiple factors including that his client, a opponent of former President Trump, was being singled out.
The former director was indicted soon after Trump pressured his top legal official to take action against him.
Judicial Process
In court on mid-week, Comey's lawyer Mr Fitzgerald informed the court they aimed to present various legal requests to terminate the proceedings before a legal hearing, stating the government's case was vindictive and that a US attorney was unlawfully appointed to take over the legal matter.
James Comey's case was first overseen by a Virginia prosecutor, who resigned under influence from Donald Trump after his examination into another rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - failed to bring criminal charges.
Judicial Environment
Mr Comey appeared in positive mood as he entered the court on mid-week, chatting with his legal team and being lighthearted. He was joined by his partner, Patrice Failor and child his daughter, a US lawyer who the Trump administration recently fired.
Upon hearing to the magistrate recite his rights and the two counts against him in court on mid-week, the defendant was asked if he understood the allegations.
"Absolutely your honour. Thank you very much," he informed the proceedings.
Previous Events
James Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from four years and was terminated about a few months into Donald Trump's initial presidency as national leader. At the moment, Mr Comey was directing an investigation into international campaign influence and whether there were any links between the Russian government and Trump's campaign.
During his tenure, the director sparked a negative reaction from Democrats when he announced just shortly prior to the 2016 election that he was examining presidential nominee the candidate's use of a private email server. Indictments against Clinton were never brought, causing criticism from the Republican party as well.
Current Allegations
Government attorneys allege James Comey gave untrue statements to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in recent years when he was being examined about both the previous examination as well as the Russia election probe. They claim he provided false information to the legislative body by stating he had not authorized an individual at the FBI to disclose to media organizations details about the FBI investigations.
Government lawyers also charge Mr Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to affect, block and slow" the panel by providing untrue information to it.
Personal Comments
Via social media James Comey published to his online platform after he was charged, he stated he was wrongly accused and accused the former president of acting like a "autocrat".
"My family and I have been aware for considerable time that there are consequences to opposing Mr Trump," he stated. "We will not live on our knees."
"I am not guilty," he stated further. "So let's have a legal proceeding."
The accusations against Mr Comey emerged after Trump shared on online platforms calling for his chief prosecutor, the attorney general, take legal action against Mr Comey and additional individuals.
